What the Beck???

The Best of Nelson County 2017

Background:  I was reading The Kentucky Standard, our local newspaper, and they had a section called The Best of Nelson County 2017. This section listed 100 categories for the Readers' Choice Awards. This is the third installation of my visits to these winning business locations.

#70    Best Dentist Office:  The winner was Shrewsbury, Claywell                                               & Oliver Dentistry

Shrewsbury, Claywell & Oliver Dentistry
is located at 621 N. 3rd Street, Bardstown.

502 - 348 - 5901

I was happy to find a local dentist when my molar "crown" popped out. I was able to temporarily put it back in place, but I
needed a local dentist to cement it in again. My neighbor, Denise Barnett, highly recommended this Dental Office. I was thrilled to learn that they were on the Best of Nelson County list.

When I called for an appointment, the doctor's were really booked up, so they suggested I schedule with OnCall which is a part of Shrewsbury, Claywell & Oliver Dentistry. If you have an evening emergency, or need a dentist like I did quickly, you can schedule with them in the evening by calling the main number.

A side note:  Robyn tell Steve that I am still loyal to him!

Dr. Taylor Cox and his trusty assistant Katlin Bertram.
They were excellent and I highly recommend them.

Ashleigh Bowman was the receptionist on duty Friday Night.

#29    Best Antique Store:  The winner was The Rusty Rooster

The Rusty Rooster is located at 620 Bloomfield Rd., Bardstown.
502 - 349 - 9299

Two of the ladies who helped me.
Thanks a bunch!

A photo of some of the items for sale.

I fell in love with the pink coffee or teapot,
but didn't buy it because of my giant purchase.

I have been searching for a table that I can turn upside
down and turn into a "princess" dog bed. My friend, Robbie,
asked me to make some things for the Barktown Animal
Rescue auction. I saw this idea online and thought it would
be really cute to create and hopefully make the shelter
some money.

This was my large purchase of the day. Being a
crafter, I have a lot of small objects. Even though I
have a tremendous amount of shelving, the small
items either fall off or fall behind the shelves, so this will
solve a huge problem in my craft room. I don't
love the paint job, but I will have to wait for the rest
of the furniture to be removed before I begin
arranging and decorating my work space.

The Best of Nelson County 2017

Background:  I was reading The Kentucky Standard, our local newspaper, and they had a section called The Best of Nelson County 2017. This section listed 100 categories for the Readers' Choice Awards. This is the second installation of my visits to these winning business locations.

#9    Best Bakery:  The winner was Hadorn's Bakery

Hadorn's Bakery is located at Flaget Ave & 4th Street, Bardstown.
502 - 348 - 4407

I have been to Hadorn's Bakery twice. The first time was at 10:45 a.m. and there was only six items left. This is an extremely popular place. It is not large, but I found it amazing how quickly they sell out each day. I initially tried their cinnamon roll which was fabulous. As I talked to people in the town, they all told me about a "Yum Yum" which is a great breakfast treat.  I highly recommend this wonderful winner.

#96    Best Hotel/Motel/Lodging:  The winner was Hampton Inn

The Hampton Inn is located at 985 Chambers Blvd. Bardstown.
502 - 349 - 0100

I love, love, love this Hampton Inn. I am a Silver Card member and only stay at Hamptons. The staff here are friendly, kind, and very efficient. I stayed here many times and the rooms are clean and the breakfast was quite good.  If you are visiting Bardstown, you should stay at this Hampton Inn.

This is a type of lounge in the evening and the location for breakfast in the morning. I spent a lot of time here processing my daily visits in the area when I was searching for my new home.

#10    Best Sandwich Shop:  The winner was Just Baked

Just Baked is located at 962 Chambers Blvd. Bardstown.
502 - 348 - 8004

This is such a cute business!

The lunch menu sounded great, and even
though they won for sandwiches I went
with the soup of the day which was Chicken Taco.
It was amazing!!!!
I also bought some cranberry pecan chicken
salad which was outstanding,

The bakery items called to me, but I decided
to be "good" and skip these today.

I really want to try the cheeseburger
potato since I love both items!

Recipe Review

Today’s Recipe and Location: Knock You Naked, Brownies
Found in: The Pioneer Woman blog

I figured out that there are 385 calories, if 16 servings are made. (Please note that the calorie counts vary depending on the specific brands of ingredients that you choose to use.)

Today, I remade an old favorite of mine. I love these Knock You Naked, Brownies!  I promised my neighbor Denise’s grandson these fabulous brownies for his ninth birthday. I plan on sharing them tomorrow with my knitting group and the library staff, too. Yum!  Yum!

I decided to protect my new 9 x 9'' pan, so I lined it
with parchment paper. Once it was lined, I greased
the paper with butter and then flour.  It took me
some time to locate this rare size pan. I usually
use an 8 x 8, but I try to say true to Ree's directions.

I began by putting a German Chocolate cake mix in a bowl.

I added in some evaporated milk

and melted some butter in the microwave.

I poured the butter into the mixture,

and then added in the chopped pecans.

 The mixture is very thick.

Ree said to divide the mixture in half.

I put half in the bottom of the pan and baked it.

 While the brownie mixture baked,
I began melting the caramels and more evaporated milk.

I pulled the baked brownie out of the oven,
and set it aside as I continued to melt the caramels.

I have to say that it took a long time to melt
these caramels on this electric stove.

 Ooey, gooey wonderful caramel.

I poured the melted caramel over the cooked brownie.

The directions said to sprinkle on the
semi-sweet chocolate chips.

I took the other half of the brownie mix and flattened
it to make a top layer. It was difficult to pick up, so I divided
it into four sections so the spatula could move it onto the caramel.

 This is the finished product.

Right before I went to Barnett's for lunch,
I sprinkled on some powdered sugar.
They are now ready to be enjoyed.

What the Beck???

The Best of Nelson County 2017

I was reading The Kentucky Standard, our local newspaper, and they had a section called The Best of Nelson County 2017. This section listed 100 categories for the Readers' Choice Awards. I decided to visit as many of them as I can and scope them out. It is a good way for me to further my knowledge of the town and local businesses, and it is also just down right fun!
       Today, I visited three locations.

#32     Best Consignment Store:  The winner was Gabby's Fine                                                              Consignments

Gabby's has new and gently used consignment items.
Gabby's is located at 93A North Salem Dr. Bardstown.
502 - 331 - 9002

This trip was a wonderful opportunity for me to shop.
I purchased this purse for only $1.00.  It was in
perfect condition.

I bought these three sweatshirts that still had
the original store tags on them.
They will be perfect in the fall when the weather turns cooler.

This tunic was fun. I thought it might be great to wear
if I ever go anywhere that I need to be a little dressier
than T-shirts and shorts.

I always love statement necklaces, and am a sucker
for anything pink. It was very inexpensive, so I had
to have it!  The purchase price of all of these
items was a whopping $25.94.

#40     Best Hardware/Building Supply Store:  The winner was                                                     Buzick's Lumber and Home Center

Buzick's is located at 1330 E. John Rowan Blvd. Bardstown, KY
502-348-5953

This block was my main reason for going to Buzick's today.
This is the base for the Santas that I make for the holidays, thanks to Marla Burger and Robyn Gola. Yes girls, I am still making them from The Spirit of Christmas books.
I have been to Buzick's in the past to have wood cut for me,
so it seemed like the perfect place to go for help.

The staff is kind and very helpful. Today, I was also looking
for stainless steel polish to keep my workroom appliances
beautiful. I have also purchased a lot of other materials here,
such as light bulbs, batteries, clamps, and Japanese
Beetle traps.

#90     Best Lawn Mower/Tractor Dealer:  The winner was Joe                                                       Hill's Powersports and Equipment

Joe Hill's Auto Center is located at
103 S. Salem Drive, Bardstown
502-348-2532

This 4-wheeler is so darn cute and has a back
bed that can be dumped.  This is my first choice.

This one is my second choice, probably because
it is larger and more expensive!  Whenever I
have saved enough money, I will buy myself one
of these 4-wheelers.

Front view of the second one.

This second one has a pretty good size bed.
Having one of these would help me transport
items to the barn and the back of the property.
It was also be fun to feel the wind in my hair!!!
